Patient Journey


  • Consult
  • Dietary Visits
    • Three (3) to six (6) depending on insurance requirements
    • Additional dietary may be required based on weight, BMI, bariatric team request
  • Psychosocial Evaluation (referred to outside source)
    • If you currently see a therapist, a letter of clearance will be required.  The letter needs to indicate that they are aware of your intent for bariatric surgery and are in agreement with you moving forward from a psychological standpoint.
      • This is in addition to the psychosocial bariatric assessment you are required to complete
  • Eight (8) weeks nicotine free
  • EGD (Endoscopy)
  • Laboratory tests
  • Additional testing as necessitated by current or previous health issues
    • Cardiac Clearance
    • Pulmonary Clearance
    • Sleep Study or eight (8) week download from current CPAP or BIPAP
    • Medical clearance from current PCP (Primary Care Physician)
    • Ultrasound, CT
    • Anesthesia
  • Two (2) to five (5) year weight history may be required for your insurance
    • FEHB insurance patients – always required


Patient Empowerment Program (PEP) / Surgery

  • Education group attendance may begin at any time before and after surgery
  • Eight (8) Week Commitment
    • REQUIRED to attend every week for three (3) weeks prior to surgery
    • REQUIRED to attend every week for five (5) weeks after surgery
  • Pre-Operative Meal Replacement begins three (3) to six (6) weeks prior to surgery
  • Week one (1) – 1200 Calorie Exchange program
  • Weeks two (2) through six (6), dependent upon weight and BMI, OptiFast Meal Replacement (shakes, soups, bars)

  • Post-operative appointments – LIFETIME COMMITMENT
    • 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, and every year thereafter
    • Yearly labs
    • EGD’s
