Adam B. Smith, D.O., FACOS
Adam B. Smith D.O., FACOS has been an Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon for 13 years. In 2002, Dr. Smith started performing laparoscopic bariatric surgeries. After seeing the great success of his patients, Dr. Smith chose the LAP-BAND® procedure for himself, and in 2004, Dr. Smith opened a private practice dedicated to the treatment of morbid obesity.
Dr. Smith feels he has a special relationship with his bariatric patients as he has walked in their shoes and continues his daily struggle just as they do. He is committed to to total treatment of the LAP-BAND patient, from preoperative preparation to the final transformation into a healthy, fit band patient.
Dr. Smith does not just focus on the total care of his own band patients but continues to participate in research regarding the optimal care of the LAP-BAND patient in collaboration with colleagues both in the practice and at the University of North Texas Health Science Center.
Recently, Dr. Smith added the StomaphyX™ and EsophyX™ procedures to his practice. StomaphyX is a navel endoluminal revision procedure for individuals who have had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and have regained weight due to a stretched stomach pouch and/or enlarged stoma. EsophyX is a transoral incisionless fundoplication for the surgical treatment of GERD.
Dr. Smith earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma and his medical degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Oklahoma State University. He performed his residency at UNT Osteopathic Medical Center of Texas. Prior to coming to Albuquerque, Dr. Smith was surgical director at the Specialty Surgery Center Fort Worth. Before this, he was associate professor of surgery, vice chairman of surgery and director of the general surgery residency program at UNT.
He is a member of the Board of Governors for the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. He is also a faculty member of the Allergan Corporation (LAP-BAND manufacturer) and the Council for Advances in Bariatrics.
Dr. Smith has also held a number of professional memberships, including the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Association, and the Texas Association of Bariatric Surgeons.
